Ted Flint

His accent was strong as he told me,
the tale of his life as a child.
He lived in Austria, before the big war,
when Hitler, his home land defiled.
-
The Nazis came in the dead of
the night, and took his father away.
Eventually he found a new home,
right here in the US of A.
-
He told me this at the time when Saddam
was doing the very same thing.
He lovingly spoke of his adopted land,
saying, "Long may liberty ring!"
-
He told me how he'd raised his family.
Teaching the difference between wrong and right,
and to stand for what they believe in,
even if it meant having to fight.
-
I saw the strength in his convictions,
and I couldn't help but compare
him to those born into freedom,
and not really seeming to care.
