It sat in our park for a long, long time.
Generations found it much fun to climb.
We took it for granted, not knowing it's worth,
to us, it was if it grew out of the earth.
-
Then a bid was offered for this historic piece,
from an Eastern museum who sought our release.
All in our town then took a new look
at this Civil War relic described in some book.
-
For years chuildren climbed it, 'twas a great prize,
but the offered sum of money opened our eyes.
Once only a toy to keep kids occupied,
all now look upon it with naustalgic pride.
-
The community decided that there'd never be
enough money offered for our memory
of all of the times that we all came to play
on our lovely cannon, to take it away.
-
it still sits in our park to the children's delight,
and as they climb, their fancy takes flight,
at times it's a horse that they sit there astride,
but to all, it's a source of community pride.
