The dress was red and made of silk
with a bolero trimmed in white.
He worked for twenty cents an hour,
times were tough and money tight.
-
As he passed the Sassy Shop,
the red dress caught his eye.
He asked the clerk the cost
and was shocked it was so high.
-
Ten dollars for one small dress,
the price was out of sight!
His mind's eye saw his daughter
and anticipating her delight,
-
he checked all his pockets and
found ten ones, a quarter and two dimes.
Today that isn't much but it
was a fortune in those times.
-
"Wrap it up", he told the clerk,
"It's for my little girl.
I know each time she puts it on
she'll preen and dance and whirl!"
-
My red silk dress was special,
how special, then, I didn't know.
Now I'm grown, I understand
that my Daddie loved me so.
