Strangers In The Night

"I couldn't sleep," she sadly said,
"May I visit you a while?"
"I'd be delighted," I replied as
I tried to coax a smile.
-
"I need to talk to someone,
Do you have time to lend an ear?
My brother killed my mother.
I am filled with doubt and fear."
-
My heart broke as I listened,
while she poured out her soul.
I admired her composure, she
never once lost her control.
-
I couldn't get her off my mind,
I could sense her great despair.
So, I stopped on my way home to
send a rose that said, "I care."
-
In the weeks that followed, she was
on my mind, though out of sight.
Then I got a lovely thank you note,
for giving time to strangers in the night.
