Dejavu all over again

I discovered a letter I had written to the newspaper many years ago. Considering the financial situation in the world today, I though 'how little things change.'

Too Many Hotel Rooms
A couple of years ago, motel business in this city was great. Full most every weekend. It was a nice pie, with plenty to go around, each motel got its share,
Then Dr. Westerberg decided he wanted some of that pie, and there was not enough to go around. At the most, the city could have used perhaps, an additional 30 to 40 rooms. Now, with a new motel and the Westerberg Hotel, with an additional 100 plus rooms each, all are hungry.
I appreciate some of the statements that have been made in this column, concerning this situation, such as: "Local people should patronize the hotel, and dining room instead of going to Seattle. Keep the money in Wenarchee."
I'm sure this was the sentiment felt by Dr. Westerberg when he had all the work done by out-of-town Contractors. And "Dr. Westerberg built this hotel because of his strong love for the community." This was shown when he lured people away from jobs of long stranding by offering them $1 more per hour than their current wage and promising them benefits (which never materialized) and a substantial raise in three months with regular raises thereafter.
Almost all the workforce, maids, desk clerks, maintenance and restaurant employees were laid off in three months, when they expected their raises.
I know a lot of local businesses, motels, restaurants, contractors, hair dressers, sales, etc., who have had a bad year. I don't see anyone standing in line to subsidize them, nor do we expect it in this free Enterprise system.
Let's face it, the man made a wrong move, and like the rest of us, he'll have to take his lumps.
CAN ANYBODY SAY STIMULUS?
