The Shadow's Fling

I spied an inviting bench
on a pretty knoll
that overlooked the river,
serenity filled my soul.
-
I sat down to rest a spell,
a brisk chill was in the air,
the snow had almost melted,
the bright sunlight warmed me there.
-
I heard the sage brush rustling,
so I turned to look about
and I found to my surprise
all the groundhogs had come out.
-
Here were Barney and his friends
romping, playing in the sun.
According to the wive's tale
this means winter is not done.
-
Six more weeks we have to wait
for the much desired Spring,
just because on Groundhog's Day,
Barney's shadow had a fling.
-
Six more weeks of Winter
is an awful price to pay
'cause Barney saw his shadow
on this lovely Ground Hog's Day.
